  • Fields of Interest: social and cultural history of middle and late imperial China.

Lucille Chia received her B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania, and her Ph.D. in Chinese history from Columbia University.  Her current research includes studies on the role of books and publishing in late imperial China, a topic inspired by work on the social history of the book being done for Europe and the U.S. and the possibilities for comparisons.  Her book, Printing for Profit: The Commercial Publishers of Jianyang, Song-Ming (960-1644) has recently been published by Harvard University Asia Center Publications.  A new research project concerns the early history of Chinese migration to various parts of Southeast Asia, especially the Philippines, and the socioeconomic impact of this diaspora on coastal regions of China from which the emigrants came.  This study represents one aspect of her interest in the history of migration of various Chinese groups, both within China and abroad.
