Public
History
The Department offers an M.A. degree in history called
the Program in Public History. PHP provides academic and
technical training for historians who intend to pursue
careers in archival management, museum curatorship, historic
preservation, and other public history enterprises. Applicants
for PHP should have a B.A. in History. Those with a B.A.
in other areas will be accepted if they can demonstrate
a satisfactory knowledge of history.
Requirements for the PHP (M.A.) degree:
- Complete a minimum of 36 units in upper-division
and graduate course work. This must include at least
two reading seminars, one graduate research seminar,
and several courses relating to the student's specialty
in museum curatorship, archival management, or historic
preservation.
- Complete a ten-week internship that provides training
under supervision and independent professional work
in the candidate's specialty. Internships are arranged
according to the student's interests. The internship
requires writing a field report.
- Pass an oral examination. The first part of the
exam will cover the field report in progress; the
second part will be on the candidate's field of history
(usually either American, European, or Latin American),
together with the student's PHP field of specialty.
- Courses in the PHP are taught by regular faculty
and by adjunct professors of history who are professionals
in nonacademic institutions, such as archives and
museums, with outstanding achievement and expertise
in their fields. PHP students may continue on for
the doctorate at UC Riverside. Admittance to the Ph.D.
program will be based on their performance in the
program.
