Welcome
to the Department of History’s web site! The Department
of History hosts a number of programs available to undergraduate
students as well as programs for graduate study and training.
The department features courses in History of the Americas
and History of Europe.
Those interested in either the undergraduate or graduate
programs and would like to meet the distinguished faculty
should visit the History department’s office hours
during the appropriate times Monday-Friday: 9:00-12:00
& 1:00-4:00.
History emphasizes an understanding of changes in society
over time. Through the study of history, students greatly
broaden their learning through the experiences of others
in many times and places and develop their comprehension
of a rapidly changing world.
The History Department offers a Bachelor of Arts degree
in History, History/Administrative Studies, and History/Law
and Society. The Department also offers an approved social
science subject matter preparation program for the Single-Subject
teaching credential. Students who complete such a program
are exempt from subject matter examinations when applying
for a teaching credential program.
Areas
of specialization in History include: Europe, the Ancient Mediterranean, Native American history, America
since 1607, Russia since 1801, Latin America, and Public
History. Faculty research activity and interests cross
traditional fields defined by time and place. They include:
cultural history, economic
history, ethnicity, family history, gender studies and
sexuality, material culture, political discourse, religious history, the social history of knowledge, and world history.
The
History faculty members have distinguished themselves
nationally and internationally in research and teaching.
They have held fellowships from the Guggenheim, MacArthur,
Mellon, and Rockefeller foundations, and from the National
Endowment for the Humanities and the American Council
of Learned Societies. They have served as invited research
fellows around the world at such eminent institutions
as the J. Paul Getty Center in Los Angeles, Harvard, the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, Oxford
and the American Academy in Rome. Just as important, the
History Department leads the UCR campus in the number
of professors who have won UCR Distinguished Teacher of
the Year awards. |
